ANDRÉ MANGEOT has published two collections to date: Natural Causes (2003) and Mixer (2005) – both widely praised. A wonderful reader and performer, he is also member of the poetry collective The Joy of Six, which has played at festivals across England and Wales, and in New York. His first book of short stories, A Little Javanese, is due out in mid-2008. He is currently writing a novel set in Romania.

André also has a local connection: his nephew Josh was at Oakham School from 1996-2002, so he knows the town well and is delighted to be returning for this year’s festival.

    STOOLPIGEONstool

Postcards on the edge Is an evening of RIOTously funny original songs, monologues and sketches loosely based around the British saucy seaside postcards of the 40's, 50's and 1960's. It is written and performed by the duo 'Stoolpigeon' who recently won BBC Radio’s Folk Quest 2007 performing songs from this show. The show reflects the postcards of the era and is a hilarious & entertaining selection featuring an array of attractive women, fat old ladies, Vicars, Nuns and drunken middle aged men in compromising situations.

The show is witty, poignant and sad. Yet it is also hilarious, laden with double entendre and full of audience partcipation. This is the modern era of ‘musical comedy’

It might not be suitable for the very young or the very sensitive but it’s a great evening’s entertainment bringing a modern edge to a classic era.

hiloLIVE AT THE CATMOSE GALLERY - THE HI & LO

    Thursday 26th June 2008

    7.30pm

The Hi and Lo are musicians Paul McClure and Nick Bott. Since forming in late 2007 they have been quick to impact on the music scene. Their brand of stripped down roots music has already earned them support slots with the highly respected American songwriters Mark Olson, Kris Delmhorst and Jason Ringberg, as well as appearances at two of the biggest summer music festivals in the Midlands. The Big Session and The Summer Sundae Weekender, both held in the grounds of DeMontfort Hall Leicester, will see The Hi and Lo perform to festival crowds alongside acts such as Supergrass, Steve Earle and The Coral.

Strong vocal harmonies and the use of guitars, banjo, drums, lapsteel, harmonica and mandolin provide a diverse and interesting texture to their original song writing. Their appearance at Oakham Festival sees the duo playing back where they began; having both met as instrumental teachers at the Vale of Catmose College. Paul McClure’s involvement in setting up a Rockschool at VCC has done much to develop the colleges thriving musical output and continues to encourage creativity among its students.

The Hi and Lo’s performance at the Catmose Gallery provides the duo with a unique opportunity to showcase their music in the environment in which it was first created.

Cruise in to the sunset on the enchanting Rutland Water, with the magical music of Pica Pica

bellePica Pica is an all-female a cappella group with a wide repertoire ranging from folk, gospel, jazz and pop to world music. Their unique sound is “the result of an evolving and wonderful collaboration” that has emerged over several years.

The name Pica Pica is taken from the call of the magpiepicapica. The connection with the species illustrates their tendency to “borrow” songs from a wide variety of sources and, in the spirit of this truly cosmopolitan bird, they easily adapt to many different environments and occasions.
