OAKHAMFESTIVAL2010

June 18th to July 4th

GovennanMaydays2lbb

OAKHAM FESTIVAL is bringing you an exciting programme of events this summer from June 18th to July 4th. We will be celebrating the arts with an eclectic mixture of performances and artists at venues across the county.

The highly acclaimed comedy troupe, The Mayday Players perform 2 nights of hilarious improvised comedy. The first show: ‘Tonight’s Top Story’, is inspired by newspaper articles cut out by the audience just minutes before curtain time. This is improvisation without tricks, gimmicks or games, just a live, onstage comic exploration, through scenes and songs, of the secret heart of our towns and cities. It is the world only hinted at by your local paper, but finally revealed by the comedic X-ray vision of The Maydays. The Second night of performance from this talented troupe: ‘Guest Who’ is a new show which brings a well known local guest to come on stage who is given a word by the audience which triggers real life stories.

Rutland Concert Band are back by popular demand following their sell our performance of music from the shows, film and well-known classical themes. There will be special events for 11-16 year olds and many performances from Oakham School, including the ever-popular Big Band Bonanza.

Festival 2010 finishes on 4th July so we have an American Theme running through some of our events. A Community Choir will be formed especially for the Festival. They will rehearse and perform music from ‘Guys & Dolls’. The Grainstore Brewery has a feast of American music over the middle weekend, there will be a Soul Band at the Merry Monk and an organ recital based on music by Charles Ives, Samuel Barber and Philip Glass at All Saints Church.

The final weekend will take place at a Marquee in the Castle Grounds, sponsored by ‘Marquees by Stuart’. There will be a party night with local bands and a celebration of local young artists in Rutland’s Got Talent. Leicester Big Band will embrace the American theme, with vocals by Rutland’s answer to Frank Sinatra. Bring your picnics and enjoy the party atmosphere.

The Festival is also supporting the Hippo Sculpture Project and an exhibition of the baby Hippos, painted by the local schools, will be in the museum. It is sure to be a highlight of the Festival.

So come along and join the fun!
